Unlike the traditional bob hairstyle of 40 years ago, today's bob hairdos are more versatile, going either shorter or longer.

If you’ve had those waist-long locks since high school, and ready for a new look, then consider getting a bob hairstyle. Simply put, a bob is a haircut where your hair is the same length, rather than cut in layers.

Advantages of Bobs

Besides being spunky and trendy, bob hairstyles are also one of the easiest hairstyles to maintain. If you don’t have a lot of time to devote to your hair, then a bob is a great cut for a busy lifestyle. With a bob hairdo, all you need is a hair blower and you’re good to go. So, toss those rollers aside and set yourself free. What’s more, bobs are suited for just about any shape of face, and can be styled in many different ways.

Variations of Bobs

Inverted bobs—This is the more traditional bob, worn tapered around the perimeter of your chin line. Adding height at the crown, the inverted bob can range from short to medium length. For an added touch, highlight a few strands. Also, with the inverted bob, the backside is more tapered.

A-line bobs---Blunt bob haircuts are also known as A-line bobs. They are cut geometrically into a straight line. The name, A-line bob, reminds you of the letter “A” with long angles on each side. With the A-line bob, the fringe is a horizontal line. The ends also form a horizontal line, brushing up to the jaw line. If you choose an A-line bob, be sure to use specific hair products suited for your texture of hair. For better manageability, use a styling gel, letting your hair dry naturally. Use a round brush, slightly turning the edges under if drying your hair with a hair blower.

Curly bob---A bob doesn’t necessary have to be straight layers that are exactly the same length and still be considered a bob haircut. To add curls, lightly layer your hair. For this hairdo, hair can be cut to just below the chin level, letting the curls gently frame your face. After shampooing, towel dry, leaving in conditioner, or using mousse through the upper layers. On the other hand, you can blow-dry, crunching softly with your fingers.

How Long?

Again, that’s a personal choice. Bobs can be as short or as long as you want them to be. Although the traditional bob of celebrities such as Doris Day, 40 years ago, hung, most often between the chin and shoulders, today’s bob are more adaptable, going either shorter or longer.

Celebrities with Bobs

A few contemporary celebrities with bob haircuts include Nicole Rickie and Sandra Bullock. For example, Nicole Richie sports a straight sleek bob. You’re more likely to get this look if you have straight hair that’s easy to blow dry or flat-iron. On the other hand, actress Sandra Bullock’s hairstyle is an example of a contemporary longer bob. Her new classic bob is angled so that it slightly dips forward into curvy points in front of her face, under her chin.

Most of all, a bob is a good choice because of its versatility. If you don’t like one style, you can easily restyle it, for another look. Consider Sandra Bullock, as she can either part her hair down the middle or wear it with a side part, looking just as stunning whichever way she styles her hair.
