Rosie The Riviter-Inspired Hairstyle

Modern Twist On The Classic Pin-Up Look

Jun 16, 2009 Jessica Gleason

Rosie The Riveter, the cultural icon whose image promoted the "WOW" (Women Ordinance Workers) campaign during WW2, was and continues to be a cultural style icon.

The real-life "WOW" ladies often emulated the tough yet sexy Rosie style with the hair twists, victory roll and bandana. While the look is fantactic, the retro style isn't always an every-day look. This style is an updated/modern hip version of the iconic Rosie The Riveter hairstyle.

What Does the Classic Rosie Style Look Like?

The style itself is quite simple as most of the hair was covered by a bandana. The bangs were done up in a curl (often resembling a victory roll) and the bandana was tied upside down starting at the base of the neck and wrapping around to tie at the top of the head.

What Does the Updated Rosie Style Look Like?

The updated style is a little bit sexier and playful, most of the hair is not covered, but the upside down bandana and mock front curl are still evident in the hairstyle. It is a modern tribute to the iconic Rosie The Riviter Style and is an excellent everyday look. Though, it can be dressed up and used as a fancy updo.

What Equiptment is Needed to Complete The Style?

The beauty of this look is that most of the equiptment can be found in any ladies bathroom. None of the strange fancy hair products or impliments are required! These things are necessary to complete the look:

  • Bristly round hairbrush or fine toothed comb
  • Lots of bobby pins or small claw clips
  • Hairspray
  • Bandana

For something a bit fancier, colored clips and fancy headbands or /bandanas can be substituted.

How To Complete The Hairstyle

  1. Make sure the hair is dry before attempting the hairstyle, wet hair would make a flatter and less unruly looking do! For more volume in the front of the hair, take a one or two-inch section and blow dry it up and back. This will create a bit more volume.
  2. Once the hair is dry, take a one or two-inch section in the front of the head (usually the bang section) and simply twist it a few times and pin it back. Use a few bobby pins to pin up the little knot that forms. This will create the faux victory roll look. For longer hair, there will be a little tail sticking up which can either be left out or tucked under the bandana depending on personal preference.
  3. From this point on, the looks is highly up to personal preference. Take a section in the front-middle part of the head and use the brush or comb to slightly rat the hair and give it a little volume. Then twist the section and secure it with bobby pins. This will create a messy updo look.
  4. Continue taking small sections, ratting them, twisting them and securing them with bobby pins or claws until all of the hair is up.
  5. Once the hair is all in place. Take the bandana and roll it up like a headband. Then tie it backwards, starting at the nape of the neck and tying it at the top or side of the head between the bang and hair areas. There should be a distinct part from when the victory roll was created.
  6. Then, spray it with hairspray and the look is complete!

Dress it up or down to suit the day. If it's a regular day, just leave it as is. For a fancy look at some sparkly stones or colored clips and a fancy headband or bandana instead of the regular one. This is a great summer look for the girl on the go. Try it out, play around and have some fun.
