How to Style Hair with Pin Curls

Gentle Hair Curling Techniques

Oct 14, 2009 Adrienne Warber

Pin curls can provide instant curls overnight without the fuss of chemicals or heated styling tools.

Pin curls are an option for heat-free hair styling. This classic hair styling method has been around for centuries in some form. Pin curls can also help you achieve today's modern hairstyles.

Types of Pin Curls

Pin curls refer to a hair setting technique in which people form curls by twisting sections of hair into curl shapes and securing the curls with hair pins. Pin curl setting can achieve tight, medium or loose curls, depending on the styling technique.

Hair pins such as metal roller pins (jumbo bobby pins), traditional metal u-shape hair pins and metal hair clips can be used to secure pin curls. You can also use plastic hair pins such as Good Day Hair Pins, to secure hair. Smooth plastic pins are much gentler on hair because they do not snag on hair when removed like metal pins. You can also use snag-free elastics in place of hair pins for setting looser curls.

Pin Curl Techniques

Before setting hair in pin curls, begin with freshly washed, conditioned and detangled hair. Use a leave-in conditioner and a styling cream, gel or setting lotion for best results.

  • For traditional tight pin curls, comb a small section of hair, smooth a dab of styling cream into the strands and wind the hair around your finger, beginning at the ends, until it is a small curl by the scalp. Secure the curl with a hair pin or clip. Repeat this until all hair is rolled into pin curls. Place a satin sleep bonnet over the hair to keep hair in place.
  • Medium pin curls are shaped in a similar fashion to traditional pin curls. Comb the section of hair smooth and apply a dollop of setting lotion. However, when you shape curls around your finger, keep it looser to form a larger curl. Attach two hair pins to hold the curl in place.
  • Gel works best with larger pin curls to hold the shape while the hair sets. Shape loose pin curls with your fingers to resemble a sausage shape. Hold the loose curl close to your scalp and secure the curl with a hair clip. You can substitute the hair clip for a snag-free elastic. Use two elastics on each end of the section of hair to hold the curl in place.
  • Another variation of the pin curl technique involves sectioning hair into ponytails before setting the pin curls. Divide the hair into two or three ponytails. Create small sections of hair within each ponytail. Use the medium or loose pin curl technique for the sections. This technique can create a lot of body and cascading curls.

If you are interested in finding ways to create curly hairstyles without heat, pin curl sets may be the answer.
