How to Get Robert Pattinson's Hair

Editor's Choice Sexy, Men's Hairstyle for Twilight's Edward Cullen

Nov 21, 2008 Jill Nessel

Use the right hair products to create the messy hairstyle of Twilight's vampire Edward Cullen, based on the New York Times' best-selling book by Stephenie Meyer.

He is the flash-famous actor Robert Pattinson, expertly chosen to play a teenage vampire in the long-awaited movie, Twilight. Perhaps even more famous than his thick, expressive eyebrows, his sultry blue eyes, and his flawless bone structure, is his hair.

Hair Products Needed to Get Robert’s Look

  • Matte styling product, such as American Crew Fiber. Fiber is a paste-like, strong-hold product that is extremely pliable. It is ideal to create Robert’s bed-head look without looking too perfect.
  • Round hair brush, such as Paul Mitchell’s Express Ion Round Brush. These brushes come in S, M, L, and XL sizes. Choose a size depending on hair length. Shorter than Robert’s? Use a smaller size. Hair the same length as Robert’s will need a M or L.
  • Blow dryer, such as Paul Mitchell’s Express Ion Dry v.1. This dryer has a low setting for controlled air flow, a cool-shot button to secure style, and dries with ionic technology for frizz-free hair.

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Robert’s Famous Flip

This style works best on longer men’s hair that is several inches long on top. The longer the hair, the higher the messy bed-head can be.

  1. Towel dry clean, wet hair.
  2. Rub a quarter-size amount of Fiber into palms of hands to warm the product. This will give the product greater pliability while styling, but will hold the finished style when it cools.
  3. Starting at the roots of the crown (think of where a crown would sit on a head), scrunch the product into the hair: more at the roots, less towards the ends. Make sure the front gets enough as this is where the most purposely styled strands will need hold.
  4. Blow dry hair on low setting starting at the back of the crown, pulling hair upwards and aiming the dryer at the roots to create lift. Continue to dry hair around sides of the crown and the top, gently scrunching and lifting hair. As hair dries, the Fiber will keep the hair from falling back. Don’t panic if hair resembles spikes instead of the desired effect. Detailed styling at the end will produce the Edward Cullen look.
  5. Dry hair until it is about 85% dry. If hair is not staying up on its own, add a dime-size amount of more Fiber throughout crown again. It is better to add more product when needed than to use too much in the beginning. Too much will make hair look shiny or greasy, and will weigh the hair down.
  6. Use the round brush in random sections to curl hair in an upward motion around the brush, and aim blow dryer directly on the hair. Experiment with how much hair is curled in each section and how tight the curl is. Using the cool-shot button on the dryer locks the curl in. The randomness of this technique is what gives the style its casual, sexy look.
  7. When finished drying hair, warm a pea-sized amount of Fiber in hands, and start separating the curls, sculpting them in different directions. Adding a tiny bit of Fiber to the ends will give the hairstyle Edward’s piecey, tousled effect.

Pattinson’s Sideburns

Don’t forget to keep sideburns long as well. Pattinson’s have grown to almost the bottom of his ear, and this gives him his Elvis-like style but with less formality. Read Who Can Wear Edward Cullen's Hair Style? for more details about hair length and who has the best chance of recreating this look.

ive had a spiked look for a while its relativaly short im try to get it longer so pull that look.the flip is hard, cause i got like a 90 degree angle spike in the front any suggestions?
Dec 11, 2008 9:19 PM
Jill Nessel :
Hey 90-degree guy,

You can tell from any photo of Robert Pattinson that he has quite long hair on top. Keep growing your hair, letting your stylist know what your goal is so she can shape the top and sides accordingly. Also, to avoid the straight up-and-down spike get the smallest round-barrel brush you can find and use it to blow dry your hair up and around it to create volume at the roots and to round-off the ends. Good luck!

my hair is very thick so i kinda get this puffy affect, now i donno if my hair is longer or shorter than robs. but what can i do other than thinning it or getting a haircut. and maybe i could be doing something wrong aswell
Dec 22, 2008 3:45 PM
Jill Nessel :
Hi Chris, thanks for your question.
If you blow dry your hair upside down you are sure to get the "puffy effect" you described. Get yourself a round brush and use it to direct the hair upward and inward. If you don't want to texturize your hair by thinning it at the hairstylist's, make sure you use enough styling product on your fingers to separate the chunks of hair and kind of twist them into place. Hope this helps!

ya i think my hair is way to thick to pull this off, oh and would it make a huge differance if i was using medium hold 'wax', instead of 'American Crew Fiber'?
Dec 22, 2008 9:32 PM
Jill Nessel :
I recommended Fiber because it has two things going for it. 1) high hold so hair doesn't fall, and 2) it has a matte finish because guys typically don't want greasy looking hair. Having said that, medium hold wax that you suggested will probably work at first, but might not have enough hold factor if you have really thick hair. Hair will droop after a while. Also, wax is shiny and if you use too much you will end up with wet looking or greasy looking hair. It's a fine balance to get the right hold with wax without too much shine.

Jill Nessel :
Hey Chris, what part of Ottawa are you in? American Crew is all over the city but I could probably point you to a couple in your area Don't be afraid to go to a stylist and tell her what you want. She can thin your hair out a bit without sacrificing overall length.
Dec 24, 2008 6:20 AM
Jill Nessel :
Kevin, you can bet Robert Pattinson has a team of stylists who make sure every highlited strand looks natural. For your black hair, you would need a professional to lighten your hair first and then add the bronze/auburn/brown/carmel/blonde. Don't even think about doing this at home or I guarantee you will be unhappy with the results. Going from dark to light is a job for a professional. Send me a pic when you're done!

Jill Nessel :
Curly Hair Guy,
Don't ever straighten your curly hair! Girls love curls! Take it from someone with stick-straight hair, curls give nice texture, volume, and show off highlites beautifully. Having said that, to get Robert's hair when you have curls you definitely need to rely on the right product and tools. My advice is the same as the directions above but it will take some practise for you to dry your hair with a round brush to slightly straighten your curls. I know it sounds counterproductive to use a round brush to straighten but you are using it to create lift at the roots and create a nice smooth chunk of hair. Take your time drying each chunk of hair. You will need to dry it more thoroughly than most (95%) so that no dampness makes your hair "re-curl" before it air dries. Lastly, Rusk makes an anti-curl product that is a chemical treatment at a salon that will take the curl out until your hair grows.

oh and one more question, do you have to go to a hair salon to buy 'American Crew Fiber' or can u get it at shoppers drugmart or somewhere else?
Dec 27, 2008 7:02 PM
Jill Nessel :
Hi Chris, you might find American Crew products at Shoppers, London Drugs or even a grocery store. The problem is, they may be counterfeit or really, really old product that will essentially be "rotten." Check out my article

http://haircareproducts.suite101.com/article.cfm/counterfeit_hair_care_pr oducts

to further explain why buying professional hair care products at a drug store or grocery store is a risk.

Hair can be shorter than Robert's for the same style, but it will not look as messy. Also, it will be harder to get that smooth, curled front piece that you can clearly see in photos #1 and #2 above. Get the smallest round hair brush you can (small barrel) and start practising drying that piece in an upward and inward motion. With hair that is not as long, you can wrap almost-dry pieces of hair around your finger with Fiber or a pomade if you like a shiny look and this will help direct the hair in a rounded look instead of just spikes.

Hi jill great guide. I will try it tomorrow. My hair is still too short to pull off anything fantastic i will have to grow it.
Your probably fed up of people asking you what products will work but I live in England and i am unaware of American fiber being sold. So i was wandering if brylcreem restyler gum would work.
Also i am blonde and i don't know if blonde people can pull of this look well ?

Thanks :).
Dec 30, 2008 10:15 PM
Jill Nessel :
I think blonde would be a nice change for this hairstyle! You might consider low-lights (highlited hair that is darker than your current blonde) to show off texture and depth of the piecey chunks. I'm not sure about the Brylcreem product--what other brands do you have? I can recommend something comparable if you let me know what else is available to you.

Hi Jill, i found some American Fiber on the internet so i will order it soon.
I have never had highlights or low-lights before so i might give it a go, I would have to win over my parents as I'm 16 lol. If i were to get low lights as you suggested what would I ask the hairdresser to do ? I don't really have a clue in this area.

Thanks :)

i have a question about the american cream fiber. Do you have to use the molding cream, forming cream, or the pomade. which one is the one that is used to get the hair style?
Jan 2, 2009 6:56 PM
Jill Nessel :
When asking a stylist about lowlights, make sure you tell him or her what you want to achieve with your cut/look/colour. Bring in a photo of Robert (or anyone's hair you like)and tell the stylist, "I like how all the curls separate" or "I don't like that the style looks too neat." A good stylist will ask you tonnes of questions about what you want and what your lifestyle is like. When I get a trim I always remind my stylist, "You know me...I don't want to spend more than 10 minutes doing my hair in the morning." That way she knows not to give me a really complicated style that doesn't fit with who I am. Your stylist may charge by the number of highlights or "foils" she puts in your hair. Ask her what colour and what placement will make the biggest impact and let her know you don't want to spend a fortune on highlights that can't be seen. Keep in mind that she may only do highlights underneath so that they are visible when you dry your hair upward.
Jan 2, 2009 6:57 PM
Jill Nessel :
American Crew comes in several varieties found in "pucks" (the round containers.) Fiber is one of them, as is Pomade, Forming Cream, etc. Any salon that carries any one of these can easily order you Fiber if they don't already carry it.

how long is his hair as edward cullen
Jan 22, 2009 7:49 PM
Jill Nessel :
The front of Edward's hair (bangs) is about down to his eyes, as is the top. This length is needed to get the height that you see in his photos. The sides are cut over the ears underneath, but the higher over the ear you go, the longer it is. Take note you cannot see the top of his ear.

Gel is not my favourite product for this style as it does not give enough hold for the length of Pattinson's hair. If your hair is much shorter, gel could work but I still recommend a paste, mud or pomade more.

Hey Jill,
I was about to buy some of the American Crew stuff off ebay until i saw your article about counterfeiting! Sheesh good thing i didn't. I live in Roseville, CA. Can you tell me some places where I can get it around here? It would also be cool if you could recommend some good Salons that we might have around here that I could go to for the cut. I never had anyone, but my mom, cut my hair and she's not exactly a professional hehe.
Mar 28, 2009 10:29 PM
Jill Nessel :
Hi Seth, sorry I can't recommend a salon in California, but I would suggest looking in the yellow pages and look for a salon that advertises what kind of "signature" salon they are. For example, Paul Mitchell, Schwartzkopf, etc. Salons that advertise what product they use tells you they are committed to the industry and usually have pretty up to date education.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with who sells American Crew in the UK. You'll have to call around and see who might sell it. If you let me know what brands you're seeing I can probably make a comparison for you. Good luck!

american crew fiber? it´s wrong, i love american crew pomade, or Loreal professionnel homme wax, Redken maybe, with grit wax, this offers a dirty look, robert pattinson don´t wash his hair

hello Jill I was just wondering what color/s does Edward Cullen have cause I plan dye my hair that color and I also wanna ask if the hold in fiber is like the hold of a wax/clay doh cause I use that to style my hair thanks

There are many styling products that will help you get this style. Fiber, wax and clay all have great hold but differing amounts, and different shine-factors.

So... there's this stuff from Paul Mitchell. It is spray wax and it works great. It looks naturally like Roberts and doesn't look like hard gel. Though it's hard to clean off your hands when you are finished... the look is great :)
