Hairstyles from the Anne of Green Gables MovieA Scene-by-Scene Description of Anne’s Braids and Updos
The 1985 Megan Follows movie and its sequel featured beautiful hairstyles of the early twentieth century. Learn how to recreate the period Anne look.
Most of the Anne of Green Gables hairstyles were simple enough for a young teenager to have plausibly created for herself. Anne’s hair is usually in some form of braids or buns, although it is occasionally shown loose. Her hairstyles were typical for a young girl during the early twenty-first century, and the progression of hairstyles throughout the movie accents Anne’s growing sense of taste and fashion as well as her maturing age. Anne of Green Gables BraidsAt the start of the first film Anne wears her hair centre-parted in two braids. She has a very light fringe, and adorns her braids with grey ribbons. Anne’s Dyed Hair and Short HaircutThe next “style” Anne is shown wearing is her dishevelled loose hair after the unfortunate dye incident. This scene reveals Anne’s hair to be bra strap length; it is slightly textured as if from braid waves. When Marilla cuts Anne’s hair short, it is shown for a few scenes in a chin-length bob with the ends curled forward. Anne wears this short style in a half-ponytail accented with a bow. Anne’s School HairstyleA few scenes later in the film, seasons have passed and Anne’s hair is once again long. At school she wears her hair in the same half-ponytail as her short hairstyle. Her bangs are now slightly heavier and worn parted in the middle. Varying HairstylesIn the next few scenes Anne is shown with a number of quickly changing hairstyles: a ponytail secured by a ribbon, twin braids bunned behind the ears, and loose twin braids similar to her first hairstyle. Anne’s Hairstyle While Walking the RidgepoleAnne’s next hairstyle is rather more elaborate. During her ill-fated walk on the ridgepole of a roof her hair is worn in two braids, one underneath the other. This look is created by taking the top layer of hair (as would be portioned off for a half-ponytail) and braiding it, then braiding the remaining hair. Anne’s braids are secured with bows of wide white ribbon. Anne’s Twin French BraidsWhen inviting Diana over for a formal afternoon tea, Anne’s hairstyle is appropriately more elaborate. She wears her hair in classic French braids, tied together at the bottom with a white bow. Anne wears a similar style, although the braids are tied separately with blue ribbons, when she pledges eternal friendship to Diana in a subsequent scene. Anne’s Single French BraidIn later school scenes Anne wears a single French plait braided fairly loosely on the head. A barrette accents the braid at the crown of her head, while a white ribbon ties the braid off. Anne’s Ballroom HairstyleAnne wears her hair loose to her first ball. It is wavy – probably due to brushed-out braid waves – and secured in a half-ponytail with a very large, stiff blue bow which covers the back of her head. Anne’s Looped BraidsWhen apologising to Josephine Barry, Anne’s hair is worn in French braids looped up behind her ears. Anne’s Braided BunThe next distinctive hairstyle Anne wears is briefly seen during her visit to Aunt Josephine – a half-ponytail, the top hair of which is braided and bunned. Anne’s Grown-Up HairstylesAt this point in the film, Anne begins to wear more adult clothing and the flat, neat hats typical of the period. Her first adult hairstyle is a braid pinned up to her head at the back, as seen in the scene where Gilbert drives her home from town. She then wears a complicated flat braided bun, accented with a large white flower, for her poetry recital. In this scene her bangs are heavily frizzed. Anne returns to a schoolgirl’s braid for her entrance exam, but wears a simple cinnamon bun during Matthew’s death scene and a braided bun during his funeral. In the final moments of the film her hair is plainly bunned, showing none of the Gibson Girl extravagance that characterises her hairstyles in the film’s sequel.
