The women of the 1960s were fearless when it came to their hair. Learn to create three of their classic hairstyles by following these simple step-by-step directions.

The 1960s was an era where women felt compelled to branch out from their comfort zones and experiment with some new daring hairstyles. Typically, popular hairstyles in the 1960s have consisted of ample volume and precisely formed curves. This trend made the '60s a decade of architecturally rich hairstyles.

Polished Pixie

For women who crave a '60s 'do that is retro yet still wearable in the 21st century, the polished pixie is the ideal hairstyle. To polish up a '60s pixie haircut, medium sized hair rollers, hair clips and setting tape will be needed. Start with damp hair and comb hair backwards to create a smooth canvas. Wrap small to medium sized sections of hair around the hair roller and secure with a hair clip.

Be sure to roll downwards as the goal is to create volume in the hair, not curls. Continue until the entire top of the head is set in rollers, then place setting tape over bands and sides to create a flat look. Once hair is dry, remove all styling components.

Voluminous Curls

Add some retro oomph to the hair by creating voluminous curls inspired by the glamorous women of the late '60s. A comb, hair rollers and hair clips will be are needed to create sexy voluminous '60s curls. Use a comb to part hair into four sections. Two sections at the sides of the head and both the center top and center bottom if the hair.

Start by wrapping the center sections of hair around rollers and securing with hair clips. Roll the center section backwards towards the nape of the neck. Then, wrap the hair at the sides of the head around rollers, rolling towards the ears. Once hair is completely dry, remove rollers and lightly mist will hairspray for a lasting finish.

The Flip

The flip hairstyle consists of voluminous roots with ends that are flipped outwards. To get the look, use medium rollers and hairpins. Part hair into four sections. Create two horizontal sections; one extending from the bottom of each ear (towards the nape of the neck) and one extending from the top of each ear (directly at the crown).

Create a center-part in the remaining hair on top of the head to form two sections. Roll a solitary roller at the side of each ear and secure with a hair clip; the hair should be rolled inwards towards the ear. Then, roll the remaining hair in each section in the same direction. Roll the bottom section of the hair upwards to create the infamous flip. Lastly, roll the remaining horizontal strip of hair downward. Allow to dry before removing rollers.
